From as young as I can remember my Dad was taking me along with him to the soccer fields all across Miami where he instilled the concepts of being a winner within us. To this day these principles are still a part of not just the boxer/athlete I am, but the father, friend, brother, son, and Christ follower.
The principles of a winner to me are: consistency, being comfortable with being uncomfortable, talking to yourself, committing yourself with your all, being able to talk to anybody and speaking life into people, and being a man of your word.
My next chapter brought me to collegiate level basketball where I was the best in my class and had the accolades to prove it. But then also came more adversity where I changed schools not just once, but twice and ended up in Milwaukee Wisconsin- a place I never imagined I’d be but one that was so pivotal to my growth and another opportunity to prove I was a winner.
I graduated college with my degree in Accounting and Finance and went through various jobs where I put that degree to use. In the midst, I welcomed my beautiful first daughter Marley into my life and this is where it all changed for me.
As mentioned, I started as an athlete who learned to play soccer, football, and basketball first. I enjoyed anything that required a ball and competition and a team sport growing up. I eventually went on to move to Lakeland and this is where I became a basketball star. Basketball was my saving grace as I was growing up grappling with trying to fit in within a new place and being a typical teenage boy. No matter what though, I saw myself as a winner. I was a winner.
I looked at myself in the mirror, the new father of a baby girl who I now got to teach how to be the best version of herself- how to be a winner. I didn’t feel entirely capable of being this Dad that she deserved at the time and this is where I found boxing. I was 300 pounds, which was easily 100 more pounds than I was 2 years prior and I found a placed called “Winter Haven Boxing” when I googled gyms near me on the internet. I called and a man who called himself Coach Marco answered. I asked him about the gym and if I could come the next day and he said “everybody wants to be a boxer but let’s see if you show up” and the phone went click. But I showed up despite his doubts and I haven’t stopped since.
Committing to proving Coach Marco Fazzini wrong brought me an incredibly successful amateur boxing career where I qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials, it gave me a family that isn’t defined by blood, and now here I am- a professional boxer with a record of 14-0. Ranked #9 in the U.S. in the heavyweight division signed with top rank boxing. I have a bigger family not just in the gym but also outside of the gym as I am now married with the addition of my second daughter Moxlie, and I continue to prove who I am.
